What made Switzerland sweep the professional jury and win Eurovision? Why didn’t Nebulossa’s proposal win the European vote? How has the festival been organized? Four authoritative voices related to music and Eurovision analyze the final of the festival, held this Saturday in Malmö (Sweden): Barei, singer and songwriter who represented Spain in Eurovision in 2016 (which was also held in Sweden and where the Spaniard finished in 22nd position, same as Nebulossa); Jose Garcia Lukeco-director of eurovision-spain.com, specialized reference website for the festival; and singers and songwriters Dellacruz and Almacorparticipants in the Benidorm Fest 2024, where they were rivals of Nebulossa.
Ask. How do you rate Nebulossa’s performance in the Eurovision final?
Barei. The truth is that what they have done on that stage in the final is precisely what the message of the song says: grow, free and empower themselves as the seconds go by. I have seen a very notable evolution in everything in recent days and the applause from the public has been constant and enormous. Bitch It is an indisputable success. I sing it at the top of my lungs every time I hear it from Benidorm Fest. My most sincere congratulations to Nebulossa.
Jose Garcia. It has been a powerful performance that has fulfilled its objective, which was to convey to the whole world and to understand the message of female empowerment behind Bitch. His handicap, the lack of competitiveness. Spain in this edition brought an enjoyable but not competitive candidacy.
Dellacruz. He has done more than enough, the performance has been very correct in every way and he has managed to lift the entire Malmö Arena and have the audience chant the entire song in unison. It is a song that also sought to echo a much-needed message, and only because of the reach it has had and the social debate it has generated have they won.
Almacor. I think they did it very well. Mery’s attitude was incredible and you could tell that the audience knew the song and she enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed it at home.
Q. What do you think has been the factor that has made Switzerland win the title?
b. Switzerland was my favorite, like the vast majority. You can’t put a but to that candidacy. He has been impeccable in absolutely everything and all of Europe has seen that. Congratulations, Nemo!
J.G. Switzerland brought the most complete package in terms of artist, voice, song, message and risky and innovative staging. A candidacy that is also accessible for televoting and very attractive to professional juries.
Nemo brought a very complete proposal both vocally and in staging. He had everything it took to win.
Almacor
d. From the day I first heard Nemo perform his song, I knew he had a good chance of taking home the contest. For me, he is a more than fair winner of Eurovision. His performance on a vocal level has been brilliant with a perfectly executed performance, despite how difficult his staging was, for which one had to be very well prepared on an aerobic level. It is a song with a very important message that it tells us through its own experience in which it tastefully mixes different styles.
TO. Nemo brought a very complete proposal both vocally and in staging. I think he had everything necessary to win, because he had lyrical, melodic parts, the movements that he made without out of tune even a note… Impeccable.
Q. What would Spain need to improve to try to win?
b. I believe that in Eurovision there is no perfect formula, much less a candidacy that can guarantee a specific position. So many factors influence it and it is so changing that every year everything and nothing can happen. Obviously, if a performance stands out for the coherence and quality in its interpretation, staging, tuning, message and on top of that it features a charismatic artist, it is more likely to make history, but it does not guarantee that top 5 that all countries crave or that victory. that we all want.
J.G. Understand the Eurovision codes and adapt the good candidates that come out of the Benidorm Fest to those codes to obtain complete, quality, competitive packs that can be differentiated in Eurovision from the rest of the candidates, and thus attract both the vote of the juries and the public European.
d. Spain needs to trust the music that is made in our country and that triumphs all over the world. I think the message is always important, but we should not focus only on this. We must create an interesting and respectful climate so that Spanish artists who are succeeding in the world mainstream take a step forward to enter the contest, and this is something that Benidorm Fest is achieving little by little.
TO. I think it is not a question of improving, but of finding the best proposal that adapts to the European tastes of that moment.
We must create a respectful climate so that Spanish artists who are succeeding in the ‘mainstream’ take a step forward to enter the contest.

Q. What is your general assessment of Eurovision 2024 in terms of the level of the participants and the Swedish organization?
b. For me, without a doubt, Sweden is the country that takes the most care in terms of production and sound for all the festivals and major events. shows musicals in Europe. I was lucky enough to experience it firsthand in Stockholm 2016 and I can attest that this is true. Just watch the Melodifestivalen and see the care and love that has been put into that preselection. It’s beastly.
J.G. It has been an outstanding festival in terms of musical proposals and diversity of genres and artists, and notable in terms of organization and logistics, despite the circumstances with the controversial participation of Israel, which has caused a city that is completely armored and full of security, and moments of tension between delegations, artists and accredited press, which have undoubtedly affected the reputation of the festival. In short, the Swedish organization has put forward a very practical festival, and at a technological level, one of the best in the last decade that, at least in this aspect, will surely mark a before and after.

d. The level, as always in a competition of this magnitude, has been very good. As for the organization, I am not the one to evaluate it since I was not there to see what happened inside on a day-to-day basis.
TO. It is noticeable that the level is increasingly higher and that at the audiovisual level there is increasingly more demand. It is no longer just about bringing the best song, but also about accompanying it with the best visual proposal.
Q. The controversy of the year has been Israel’s participation. What did you think of your time at Eurovision?
b. This topic is very very complex. The only thing I think should be reflected on is why some countries have been disqualified from participating in this festival on many occasions and others have not. If we take Eurovision as a purely musical festival, I consider that any artist should have the right to participate, but if we go to the origin of Eurovision and take into account its political and social purpose, then I understand the resistance to its participation on the part of many. It is a complex issue, but there should be the same conditions for everyone as a matter of justice.
J.G. Unnecessary in the current geopolitical context. The Israeli delegation has been the focus of much tension and has destabilized the values of coexistence, respect, tolerance and diversity of the festival itself.
d. It is a competition in which music and the high level that has been present this year from all the delegations must prevail. May music serve to unite and carry a necessary message of freedom and peace and that anyone who goes against these principles should refrain from participating of their own free will and because they are not in line with the values of the contest.
Israel’s participation was unnecessary in the current geopolitical context. The Israeli delegation has been the focus of much tension and has destabilized the values of the festival

Q. San Marino had Spanish representatives this year, although they did not reach the final. What did you think of Megara’s performance in the second semi-final?
b. Megara has a spectacular live performance, Kenzy has a great voice and the talent and personality are indisputable. I have been to several concerts and the energy they transmit is explosive. Being on that stage generates many, many, many nerves and the beating of the previous months must be experienced. In her performance I felt nervous at some moments and at the same time a brutal dedication, strength and ability to exploit the audiovisual media that a festival like this offers. I hope they return another year to represent Spain in the final as they deserve.
J.G. Megara’s work, with a Spanish team, has been outstanding, presenting in Malmö a competitive performance that is well narrated and executed for a country as small (and not very eligible for votes) as San Marino.
d. Megara is a clear example of work and perseverance, I am also very proud of them. They have done a very good performance and have managed to fulfill the dream they had. I can only define them as inspirational.
TO. They did it very well, they managed to tell a story and connect with the audience. I hope they don’t lose hope and come back.
Q. Would you change anything in the voting system in the final (jury and televoting) or the semifinals (televoting only)?
b. I would change so many things… (laughs). There are undoubtedly expert people who know why voting is done, how it is done, and you have to trust their criteria and motives when voting systems change.
J.G. Yes, I would reintroduce the 50/50 professional jury vote in the semi-finals.
d. In principle no, the only thing I would emphasize is to base ourselves solely and exclusively on what happens on stage.
TO. I would like televoting to be accessible to everyone through a free app (laughs). I know it’s a lot to ask, but when it comes to changing something, I think that would be my change.
