The Dutch Grand Prix was the best event in Formula 1 last year when it comes to atmosphere, says Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali. “The energy that was released was fantastic. Zandvoort has raised the bar for other circuits,” said Domenicali at a meeting of title sponsor Heineken.
The Italian witnessed the first Formula 1 race at the Zandvoort circuit last year after 36 years of absence. The corona virus was still raging, but 70,000 exuberant visitors enjoyed Max Verstappen’s victory march for three days. ,,We had some concerns beforehand about how the Dutch fans would react to the other drivers, but that turned out not to be necessary. Everyone was warmly welcomed. The audience showed itself to be very mature,” said Domenicali.
According to the director of Formula 1, the event in Zandvoort also meets another important condition of the sport. “Formula 1 promotes sustainability and wants to be climate neutral by 2030. Here too, Zandvoort is leading the way”, he referred to the organisation’s progressive mobility plan. Cars will be banned in Zandvoort for the next few days, visitors can only travel to the coastal town by public transport and preferably come by bicycle.

The current contract of the circuit in Zandvoort with Formula 1 runs until next year, when the third race will be held in the dunes of North Holland. There is an option for another two years. The organization expects to have clarity at the beginning of November about being able to hold the Dutch Grand Prix in 2024 and 2025. ,,We are not worried about ticket sales, but we also need our partners and the government. We only have an event if it is 100 percent funded,” said general director Robert van Overdijk.
Formula 1 expert Giedo van der Garde is positive. “As long as we have Max Verstappen, there is a very good chance that Formula 1 will remain in Zandvoort in the coming years and that is of course very nice.”
