The ice dam in the center of Alavieska collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
Northern Ostrobothnia the flooding of rivers in the southern parts has continued on Saturday, tells the ely center of the area.
In Kalajoki, the ice dam in the center of Alavieska collapsed on Saturday afternoon, and the ice in Kalajoki is now piling up near the village of Tyngä, where the water is rising.
Ice dams have raised the water level of the rivers. The flood center said on Friday that the water will rise in many places clearly higher than the average spring flood.
The flood situation in Kalajoki has been eased by regulating the top lakes of the river and by cutting ice before the flood. Sawing has helped the exceptionally thick ice to leave.
To the rescue service the flooding has caused a lot of tasks. The duty chief of the North Ostrobothnia rescue service Esa Kaikkonen by five o'clock on Saturday afternoon, there had been a good ten rescue missions due to the flood. Since Thursday, there have been as many as 60 tasks.
“Water has been pumped mainly from the basements and also from the floors. The protection of the houses has also been done and people have been advised on how to protect the house,” Kaikkonen told STT.
The rescue service of Pohjois Ostrobothnia announced on Friday that in addition to the pumping and protection tasks, one person was evacuated on a surface rescue raft.
According to Kaikkonen, the year is exceptional, because there have been many tasks in a fairly small area.
“As a rule, the tasks have been limited to the area of the first 40-50 kilometers of Kalajoki.”
Kaikkonen says that Saturday has been reasonably warm, and no frost has been promised for the coming night. That means rivers will continue to melt rapidly. Next week, however, there will be frosty days, and Kaikkonen predicts that the thaw will slow down.
According to the ely center of North Ostrobothnia, the flows of Lestijoki and Kalajoki are still rising. The peak is reached on Sunday or Monday. The rain expected for the night before Sunday may increase flood heights.
Southern Ostrobothnia ely center on the other hand told on Saturday, that the flood peak of Kyrönjoki and the southern Ostrobothnia rivers was reached on Friday. The river flows have decreased, but will still remain high in the coming days.
The surface of Lake Kuortaneenjärvi is predicted to be at its highest in the middle of next week. According to current forecasts, the lake level is rising close to the level of the spring 1984 flood.
The floods have also inspired children to play. However, the North Ostrobothnia rescue service hopes that parents will warn their children against playing in the flood zone. Large ice blocks and strong currents also pose a danger to adults.
The ely center of Southern Ostrobothnia also advises to avoid moving in flooded areas. The ely center advises residents of flood-prone areas to prepare by protecting their property, because preparation prevents and reduces flood damage.
