Brooklyn District Judge Pamela Chen jailed Reinaldo Vazquez, the former president of the Salvadoran Football Association.
Confessions of Vasquez
• During his guilty plea last year for conspiracy to engage in racketeering, Vasquez, 66, admitted receiving a bribe of $350,000 in 2012 from Miami-based Media World.
• The company mediates the sale of broadcast rights targeting Spanish speakers.
• In exchange for bribery, Vazquez played a role in urging the Salvadoran Federation to arrange the sale of media and marketing rights for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
The Vazquez case is part of a broader corruption investigation at FIFA, which has resulted in 27 guilty pleas and two court convictions.
Bron Pace, the chief federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, said in a statement that Vasquez and the other defendants “disgraced themselves by amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes at the expense of a beautiful sport.”
Vázquez led the Salvadoran federation during 2009 and 2010, and FIFA banned him for life and fined him 500,000 Swiss francs ($51,2610.21) in October 2019, after the FIFA internal ethics committee found him guilty of taking bribes.
