Made in Italy, but also sold in the United States. The marketing strategy of the new electric Fiat 500 overseas always maintains some roots in our country, and in particular in the Mirafiori plant. Having said that, the return of the Cinquino to the USA cannot go unnoticed: it was 2020 when Fiat announced the stop sales of its iconic city car on American roads, and now, two years later, the model which is first in Italy in the electric vehicle segment, second in France, Germany and Spain and on the podium in Europe is ready to take back the scene precisely there.
“The new 500e is a social project that will fuel America’s desire for change towards sustainable mobility – stated Olivier Francois, CEO of Fiat at the Los Angeles Motor Show – We want to bring electric to American homes with our icon, the Fiat 500″. Repubblica on newsstands this morning, however, brings up a decidedly delicate issue: that linked to industrial effects which will arrive in Italy, the only country that produces the 500 worldwide. At the moment there are two work shifts on the line at Mirafiori, with around 190 cars a day being produced for an average of 8,000 units built every month. The US homologation procedure for the European version of the 500 has already begun: pre-orders open in 2023, deliveries expected the following year instead.
“If it continues like this, to make a possible third shift the company will have to hire – highlighted the Fim secretary of Turin, Davide Provenzano – The fact that Mirafiori is the only factory that produces is important for us”. The words of the metalworkers’ trade unionist refer to the estimates put forward by the acronym that he himself represents, in collaboration with CISL, according to which the small electric 500 should close the current year with around 70,000 copies produced at Mirafiori. An important number, which as mentioned will force the Turin brand to take measures in terms of workforce.
