When Carlos arrived in Turn 11 he suddenly lost his rear and only for a mix of luck and skill he managed not to replicate what Leclerc did on Friday and crash violently against the protective barriers.
Sainz, in fact, grazed the protections with the right side of the rear wing endplate, bending the aerodynamic component, but managed to return independently to the pits. However, the short time available did not allow the Ferrari mechanics to replace the entire wing and it was decided to send Carlos back on track with new medium tires.
The damage to the endplate, however, did lose some points of downforce and this played against Sainz. When Carlos arrived in Turn 13 he lost the rear again, but this time he didn’t start spinning and simply cut into the escape route but had to abort the lap.

“In turn 11 something happened that hadn’t happened during the whole weekend. I suddenly lost the car, I managed not to touch the wall but the endplate of the rear wing touched it ”.
Sainz then explained that he discovered the damage to the wing by checking in the mirrors. Despite this, he still tried to go through without success and tomorrow he will be forced to start from fifteenth position for an attacking race.
“I didn’t hear anything but I saw in the mirrors that the wing was damaged. I tried to do another round with the damaged wing. Up to turn 11 I was faster, but then the wing started to move and the car started again at 13 ”.
The disappointment with today’s result is enormous. Sainz was experiencing an excellent end of the season and on several occasions he had shown a feeling with the SF21 superior to that of Leclerc.
“It’s a shame because a small mistake has had an important consequence. It’s a shame because I was very fast in Q1 and all weekend, but such a small mistake costs a lot ”.
