Political experts and analysts considered that the issue of illegal immigration has become a card used by some African political regimes to put pressure on Europe, and that the unrest taking place in the Sahel and Sahara countries increases the rates of the flow of illegal immigrants across the Mediterranean.
The political researcher specializing in African affairs, Muhammad Turshin, considered that there are direct repercussions of the unrest and political instability in the countries of the Sahel, Sahara and the Chad Basin on the rates of illegal immigration from Africa to Europe, which is striving to confront the flows of migrants through security, economic and political partnership agreements with the countries of the Sea Basin. Average.
Turchin explained to Al-Ittihad that European countries must work to support development and achieve political stability in African countries as a sustainable solution to stop the phenomenon of migration, especially since they are suffering from unrest and are using the issue of illegal immigration as a card and weapon in dealing with European countries to reach political and security understandings. .
For her part, Dr. Nermin Tawfik, researcher in African affairs and general coordinator of the Pharos Center for Consulting and Strategic Studies, said that the West African region is witnessing high rates of illegal immigration and attempts to reach Europe, and this phenomenon existed even before the political turmoil that the region has witnessed in recent years. .
Tawfiq explained to Al-Ittihad that there are several reasons for this phenomenon, most notably the high rates of unemployment, the decline in growth indicators in African countries, and young people resorting to searching for better life opportunities. Climate changes have increased the difficulty of the situation and caused waves of drought, as well as the global crises and repercussions that have occurred. The Ukrainian crisis on food security in Africa, and the repercussions of the Corona pandemic.
She pointed out that the repercussions of the recent political unrest in these countries on the increase or decrease in rates of illegal immigration are linked to the extent of the ability of the new regimes that came against the backdrop of military coups to achieve economic growth and political stability in their countries, meaning if they were able to provide more job opportunities for young people and raise rates of Growth will lead to a reduction in illegal immigration rates, but if political unrest and regional conflicts increase, this will lead to an increase in illegal immigration.
Tawfiq pointed out that the danger of the spread of terrorist movements in the African Sahel countries, and the continuation of these movements in their terrorist operations against people, is also considered a factor in increasing illegal immigration from West African countries.
