The European Union announced that it will significantly increase ammunition production this year in response to Ukraine's increasing demands for support in its current crisis.
European Union Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton confirmed, during a visit to Estonia, that the Union will be able to produce at least 1.3 million rounds of ammunition by the end of this year.
“We are at a critical moment for our collective security in Europe,” he told reporters. “Europe must support and continue to support Ukraine by all means.”
Breton noted that by March or April 2024, the 27 EU member states will reach the production capacity target of one million shells as ammunition each year.
He added, “We will continue to enhance our production capacity, including by about 1.3 to 1.4 million… at the end of this year, and we will continue to increase significantly during the coming year.”
He continued, “We need to make sure that the largest part of this step will be in the interest of Ukraine as a priority.” Because this is where there is an urgent need.”
In turn, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris would send dozens of long-range missiles to Ukraine.
Yesterday, Friday, Macron urged arms manufacturers to accelerate production to increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
“We must expand the transformation we have begun” to respond more quickly to Ukraine’s needs, he said, in a New Year’s speech to the French armed forces.
