The Emirates Cycling Team achieved a new achievement, as Adam Yates clinched the Swiss Tour title, beating his teammate Joao Almeida on the final day of the race.
Almeida tipped the balance in the difficult final time trial stage, which extends from Aigle to Villars-sur-Ollon (15.7 km), achieving 23 minutes and 33 seconds, narrowly ahead of Yates by about 8 seconds, and thus the Emirates team recorded its forty-third victory this season.
Almeida said: I am very happy to win the time trial stage, and I think it is my first victory in a time trial in a race other than the national championships, so the victory is very good, and at the beginning of the day, I knew that it was impossible to win the general classification against Yates, because he is very strong, and I did not “It’s a time trial on a flat track, so I’m very happy to win, and to get second place behind him, and we did perfect teamwork, so it was a great week.”
It is noteworthy that the UAE team is in a good position, before competing in the Tour de France, where both Yates and Almeida are scheduled to play important roles.
Yates said: “It is definitely among my most important victories, and two days ago, I was not sure if I could win. When I crossed the two time check points, Joao was in front of me, and I knew that he would speed up a little at the end. In fact, I could not increase my speed.” I was already over my limit, so I just tried to keep up the pace and luckily that was enough.
