EL PAÍS, the leading information newspaper in Spanish, opens its edition in the United States. Designed for a diverse and thriving community that exceeds 60 million people, EL PAÍS US aspires to be the informative voice and meeting place of the Latin universe in the North American country. With this new commitment, the newspaper also advances its successful implementation on the continent, which began in 2013 with the birth of EL PAÍS América, and which already has its own editions in Mexico, Colombia and Chile, in addition to EL PAÍS in English which will continue to focus on the United States.
One of the objectives of EL PAÍS US is to offer closer and more local information for those in the United States who have Spanish as their mother tongue and, given its rise, for those who use it as a second language. Politics, health, business, education, culture and entertainment will focus the efforts of an editorial team, directed by Inés Santaeulalia, who will work on the ground from New York to California. It will also have the support of one of the largest networks of journalists in the Spanish-speaking world, with nearly 400 journalists who are distributed in newsrooms and delegations around the world, especially Mexico and the rest of Latin America.
The new edition wants to address Hispanic readers directly with the aim of informing and telling stories that help interpret their reality and aspirations. Those of a community that is experiencing a moment of strength, that is growing in number and influence, and occupies a greater political, economic and cultural space every day. Its presence in the field of music is already incontestable and in a historically monolingual society like the United States it is no longer surprising to hear Spanish on any stage. Cinema, television, sports and art speak more Spanish today than ever. EL PAÍS US will closely follow the great Latin stars and those who are making their way, focusing on the Hispanic cultural world and the world of entertainment.
“It is an edition made in and from the United States, which will allow us to advance in our commitment to inform the Latin community. Our challenge is to offer a voice and a rigorous information space to the more than 60 million people who speak Spanish in the United States, with the aim of promoting participation in the political, social, economic or cultural life of a key community in the structuring daily image of American democracy,” says the director of EL PAÍS, Pepa Bueno.
The departure of EL PAÍS US comes at a key moment. On November 5, Americans will choose their next president between Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump. The Latino vote, which already totals 36 million voters, will define the result of the polls because no candidate can reach the White House without adding Hispanic support. This electoral campaign will also speak Spanish and the messages and promises of both parties will look at this sector of the population with more interest than ever.
EL PAÍS US, in addition to the site, will have its own social networks in instagram and Twitter. To strengthen the presence on Facebook, a group will be created on the EL PAÍS account, which has more than 300,000 followers in the United States, under the name Latinos in the United States.
