South America In Ecuador, at least six people have died and 30 are missing after a landslide, the country’s authorities said on Sunday local time. In addition, six people were reportedly injured.
A landslide hit the tourist town of Baños de Agua Santa in the province of Tungurahua. The active Tungurahua volcano is located nearby.
On Saturday the heavy rains that started continued in the area on Sunday, hindering rescue efforts. The main road leading to the area was closed to traffic.
As a result of the heavy rains, several rivers in the region were overflowing their banks, the pictures sent to the AFP news agency by local residents showed.
According to the Ecuadorian president’s office, the heavy rains had caused widespread damage in other parts of the country as well.
