57 people were injured on Friday, including two in serious condition, as a result of a passenger train colliding with a maintenance train in Buenos Aires.
Emergency services official Alberto Crescente told the press at the scene that the two seriously injured people, who had suffered head trauma, were transported by helicopter, and one of them underwent successful neurosurgery.
According to the public railway company, a passenger train consisting of seven cars collided with a maintenance train containing a locomotive and an equipment car, in the Palermo area, shortly after 10:30 (13:30 GMT).
The Ministry of Health reported that a total of 57 people went to hospitals, some on their own initiative, after leaving the scene.
Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri said at the accident site that after the collision, emergency services and firefighters evacuated all passengers in about forty minutes.
Technicians and experts from the scientific police remained at the site for several hours after the accident.
Transport Minister Franco Mugita said the investigation was examining in particular whether there was a “signaling issue”, whether on the part of the technical train that was operating on the track or on the part of the passenger train.
