This freezing Sunday, 26th, in São Paulo serves as a preview for the typical winter announced by the City Hall’s Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE). Although the change of season only happens on June 20th, thermometers have already started to drop in the capital and the state this weekend. But what will the weather be like in the next few days?
According to the CGE, the cold front that arrived in São Paulo this Sunday is expected to cause widespread rain, gusts of wind and colder temperatures throughout the week. “The action of a mass of polar air decreases temperatures even further, with colder mornings predicted for the course of the week”, says the City Hall body.
The forecast from the meteorology company Climatempo is for a slight rise in temperature this Monday, 27th, but still freezing weather. The minimum drops from 13ºC this Sunday to 14ºC tomorrow. The maximum rises from 16ºC to 20ºC.
The rainy weather lasts until Tuesday, the 28th, when the clouds begin to disappear in the afternoon and the sun appears a little stronger. There is no rain forecast until Sunday. On Saturday, the thermometers rise a little more: a minimum of 14ºC and a maximum of 27ºC.
The City Hall says it will activate Operation Low Temperatures (OBT) from this Monday, the 27th, whenever thermometers reach 13ºC or less. Tents will be set up to distribute blankets and soups to homeless people during the night.

Coast and interior of São Paulo
On the coast of São Paulo, it rains all week, except on Saturday, the 1st, and Sunday, the 2nd, in Guarujá, in Baixada Santista, and in Ubatuba, in the north of the state. Both cities have minimum and maximum forecasts similar to those of the capital, according to Climatempo.
Inland, the rain also lasts until Friday, the 31st, in Araraquara. The minimum is 18ºC and the maximum is 23ºC on Tuesday, 28th, and 18ºC and 25ºC on Saturday in the city in the center of the state.
In Ribeirão Preto, the rain stops on Wednesday and the thermometers are higher at the end of the week: a minimum of 16ºC and a maximum of 29ºC on Saturday.
Cyclone passage in Rio Grande do Sul
According to a weather report released by the company MetSul this Sunday, the 26th, the forecast is for more rain in Rio Grande do Sul at the beginning of the week. An extratropical cyclone begins to form this Monday, the 27th, and should bring, in addition to storms in some regions of the south and east of the State, strong winds and a storm surge at sea.
However, heavy rain should not reach the most critical flooding points in the state. Nor should there be enough water volume to increase existing flooding.
“It will not cause a significant increase in flooding in the rivers that cut through the valleys, in Jacuí and, in effect, in Guaíba”, says MetSul. “Where it should rain the most is in the basins of the Gravataí, Sinos and Caí rivers, but without volumes that would cause a major flood.”
The meteorology company also points out that, after the cyclone, the situation should improve. “This type of system (cyclone) usually propels dry air towards Rio Grande do Sul when it starts to move away. Therefore, once the instability of this beginning of the week has passed, it will not bring new river floods in already damaged areas.”
According to the company, the end of the cyclone’s passage will guarantee several days in a row without heavy rain, which could contribute to lowering the level of flooded rivers. The rain moves away and the sun begins to appear more intensely in the state between Thursday and Friday.
