Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his third goal against Tottenham
MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo put his name in the record books as the all-time leading goalscorer in professional football with 807 goals after a brilliant hat-trick against rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Premier League this Saturday.
The title of all-time leading goalscorer in football is hotly contested and FIFA does not maintain an official record, but the world body estimates that Austrian-Czech Josef Bican scored 805 goals during a career that spanned from 1931 to 1955.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal in the 12th minute at Old Trafford was an excellent long-range shot that helped him equal the record.
The Portuguese overtook Bican after a well-aimed pass from Jadon Sancho to put United in front by 2 x 1. In the second half, he scored the third to put United in front again and give the final numbers to the game: 3 x 2.
It was Ronaldo’s 59th career hat-trick and the first for the Old Trafford team since 2008 after his return.
Ronaldo’s goals were scored by Sporting, United, Real Madrid, Juventus and the Portugal national team.
The Czech Federation said Bican’s total was actually 821 goals after a review of his statistics.
Pele and Romario each scored over 1,000 goals during their careers, but these statistics include goals in amateur, unofficial and friendly matches.
