The general secretary of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping, has informed Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega that he is interested in strengthening “mutual political trust” between the two nations, whose relations have recently been renewed. The information was released by the Nicaraguan government itself last Sunday (30), according to the international press.
Through a letter, Jinping thanked Ortega for the congratulations sent on the occasion of the Chinese New Year, the “Year of the Tiger”, which begins on February 1st. In the text, China’s dictator said he was willing to “promote cooperation in various fields, as well as shake hands to build a community with a shared future for humanity.”
Relations between China and Nicaragua were established in December 2021, when the Central American country broke off its more than three-decade diplomatic ties with the province of Taiwan, seen as a “rebel” by the great Asian dictatorship. This occurred after the Organization of American States (OAS), the European Union and much of the international community did not recognize the Nicaraguan elections, which took place last November, in which Ortega was fraudulently re-elected.
The international reprisal was followed by the agreement with China. In recent weeks, the countries signed a document that provides for the establishment of agreements for mutual support, commercial cooperation, exemption from diplomatic passports and mechanisms for bilateral political consultations. On January 28, the government of Nicaragua announced that China will finance the construction of houses in 84 municipalities in the country.
