Champions League at risk: Uefa calls meeting for war in Europe

Uefa has decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of its Executive Committee for this Friday to evaluate the situation and take the necessary decisions, given the evolution of events in the last 24 hours between Russia and Ukraine.

“Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA President has decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET, in order to assess the situation and make all necessary decisions”The agency announced in a statement.

UEFA had scheduled a meeting of its Executive Committee for Tuesday, March 22 and is very aware of the evolution of the facts, especially taking into account that Saint Petersburg is the city designated to host the Champions League final of this edition.

Names of possible alternatives have already begun to emerge. From English media points to Wembley.

Another change of venue

The last two editions, the highest European body has already had to modify the venues for qualifying matches and the final due to the pandemic.

In the 2019-20 season, in which the title was going to be defined in Istanbul, the matches were played in a single match from the quarterfinals in Portugal and the final took place in Luz with victory for Bayern Munich over PSG. And in the 2020-21 campaign, in which the final was going to be played in the Turkish city again, the title was played by Chelsea, champion, and Manchester City, at the Do Dragao stadium in Porto. Also due to the pandemic, UEFA had to modify the program and scenarios of the 2019-20 Europa League. Two round of 16 matches were played in Germany, the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the final, in which Sevilla beat Inter Milan in Cologne.
