On December 3, a cardiologist at the SM-Clinic Daria Sergeeva told Izvestia how to protect herself from frostbite in winter.
As the specialist explained, hypothermia of the body is a condition in which, due to the effect of cold on the body, the body temperature drops to less than 35 degrees. At the first degree of hypothermia (body temperature 32-34 degrees), the human skin turns pale, becomes covered with goose bumps, chills occur – involuntary muscle contractions aimed at warming the body, speech function is slightly inhibited.
With further cooling, the pulse slows down, consciousness is inhibited, the normal functioning of all organs and systems of the body is disrupted.
Frostbite is a consequence of local exposure to cold. Frostbite primarily affects the skin in areas not covered by clothing, as well as the hands and feet.
“If you feel that you are losing sensitivity in your face, in your fingers or toes, or if you start to feel chills, it is worth going into a warm room to go in and warm up. If the tip of the nose, cheeks or fingers turn white, then this should be done immediately, ”Sergeeva recommends.
Wind and humidity accelerate heat loss, so long walks in windy weather and significant rainfall should not be planned, the doctor said. For leisurely walks in the park and static activities (for example, fishing), clothes made from natural fabrics are better suited, which retain heat well.
If physical activity is expected (skating, running, etc.), then it is better to give preference to modern technological materials – fleece sweatshirts, jackets made of membrane fabrics, since they wick moisture away from the body well and do not impede movement. In any case, Sergeeva advised to dress in layers, as this contributes to better heat retention. Also, do not forget about gloves, hats and a scarf or balaclava, since in cold weather the greatest heat loss occurs during breathing and through the scalp and hands.
The cardiologist also clarified that when smoking occurs peripheral vasospasm, so this can contribute to hypothermia. It is also dangerous to drink alcohol in the cold, as it accelerates heat loss and dulls vigilance.
On December 2, Candidate of Medical Sciences, an immunologist-allergologist Nadezhda Loginina spoke about the peculiarities of the manifestation of allergy to cold, as well as the methods of its treatment.
The doctor noted that in rare cases, the disease can manifest itself when eating cold drinks and food, even if this food is at room temperature, in the form of esophageal spasms, pain in the stomach. Such patients, according to the specialist, are forced to comply with a strict regimen.
Login added that such an allergy is clinically manifested in most cases in the form of edema, redness of open areas of the body. Prolonged exposure to air can also cause cold urticaria, accompanied by itching and burning.
