The BMW M Hybrid V8 is out in Los Angeles. BMW M Motorsport’s first-ever prototype in 25 years will make its racing debut in January.
The long-distance racer with huge grille from BMW has arrived. The BMW M Hybrid V8 makes its debut in Los Angeles at the Peterson Museum.
For this special occasion, the car is decked out in the iconic BMW M livery and features the necessary huge M logos.
50 years of BMW M
Not entirely coincidentally, this coincides with the 50th anniversary of BMW M. Just to refresh your memory, on May 1, 1972, BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded. This year it is therefore a party and BMW Motorsport is scattering anniversary logos and special versions. Also a great opportunity to return to the highest level in racing, endurance racing.
Biggest grille of all time
The spiritual successor to the V12 LMR was unveiled yesterday at a flashy event at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. Equipped with the largest grille in 50 years, but in width and not in height as we see on the M3 or M4. That M logo is also not to be missed, on the shark fin, but also on the front.
drivers
In addition to the car, it is of course also important who will take place behind the wheel. The electrified endurance racer will be kept on the tarmac by factory BMW M drivers Connor De Phillippi (USA), Philipp Eng (AUT), Augusto Farfus (BRA), Nick Yelloly (GBR). For the 24 Hours of Daytona, where the car will make its racing debut, IndyCar driver Colton Herta will also join.
To Europe
All very far away of course, but don’t worry, the BMW M Hybrid V8 is also coming to Europe. From 2024, the car will compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). That also means participation in the 24 Hours of LeMans where in 1999 the V12 LMR still took the win.
The car’s real racing debut will be at the 24 Hours of Daytona on January 28 and 29, 2023.
Several brands are developing cars for this new class, including: Peugeot 9X8, Porsche 963, Toyota GR010 Hybrid, Glickenhaus Hypercar
