Rain of investments by BMW with the aim of accelerating the transformation of its factory Steyr, in Austria. The German carmaker has announced that it will allocate up to 1 billion euros to its Austrian plant by the end of this decade to ensure that it can improve the production and development of its next generation electric thrusters. This is a plant of great importance for BMW: we recall that the structure has been operational for more than 40 years, and that today one in two vehicles of the German group worldwide has an engine built in the Steyr plant.
As reported by Carscoops, the conversion process of the Steyr plant involves the creation of a new two-story production site, which will house two assembly lines for electric thrusters and transmissions. A second new building will also be built, thanks to which the logistics areas of the site will be expanded: overall, the total production area will extend by approximately 60,000 square meters. Once the conversion of the plant is completed, the German group will produce more than 600,000 electric powertrains in the factory every year, although keeping active the production of diesel and petrol engines. About half of the 4,400 employees currently employed at the site will then work in the field of electric mobility by 2030. Finally, by 2025, the factory will be powered solely and exclusively with green and renewable energy.
“The manufacturing industry is an important partner when it comes to strengthening Austria in terms of creating jobs and promoting innovation – Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said – In all these respects, the BMW Group in Austria is already a model company today. It works as a powerful engine for a sustainable future for our country, proving once again that climate protection and economic growth are not contradictory, but can go together ”.
