Today, Saturday, the American television network CNN announced the rules for the first debate that will be organized between Democratic President Joe Biden and his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, who is seeking to return to the White House as part of the 2024 US presidential election campaign.
The debate will take place on June 27, and will last an hour and a half without an audience.
The debate between the main candidates in the US presidential elections will take place in Atlanta, Georgia (south-east), at a much earlier date than usual.
The channel had indicated, last May, that the debate would take place without an audience, which is what Biden prefers.
Today, Saturday, it was announced that the two candidates’ campaign teams had agreed to a set of other arrangements, including the use of two identical platforms and two disableable microphones.
The network explained that “the two microphones will be muted for the duration of the debate, except for the candidate when it is his turn to speak,” adding that the presenters, Jack Tapper and Dana Bash, “will use all the tools at their disposal to impose timing and ensure a civil discussion.”
The debate will be interrupted twice to air commercials, and both candidates will not be able to communicate with their teams during those periods.
Pre-written notes will also be prohibited on set, but “candidates will be given a pen, a packet of paper and a water bottle.”
Biden and his rival Trump agreed to hold two debates before the presidential elections scheduled for November, the first on June 27 and the second on September 10, and the second debate will take place on ABC.
In mid-May, the 81-year-old Democratic president challenged Trump, saying, “Right now he says he wants to debate me again.” “In this case… I would do it twice,” Biden added in a video.
The former US President immediately responded, “Tell me when and I will be there. It’s time for battle!!!”
