Two qualifications in one at Spa, due to a rain of penalties for the replacement of power units and gearboxes. With Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc out of the game, the duel for pole between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz was won by the Spanish Ferrari driver, who will start in front of everyone with a great chance to aim for victory. The Mexican from Red Bull, on the other hand, paid for a strange strategic choice by his team, which did not ask Max to give him the trail (which instead happened in Ferrari and which made a difference in terms of timing).
The actual pole, however, is that of an ‘alien’ Verstappen, who trims over six tenths of the competition even though he is aware of having to start from 15th position on the starting grid. The Dutchman, therefore, should not at all be excluded from the fight for the final victory, especially in light of what we saw in Hungary and the superiority shown above all between PL3 and qualifying.
A monopolized second row by Mercedes was expected, but in the end in third position there will be Fernando Alonso, who has mocked both Lewis Hamilton – who will start next to him – and George Russell (only fifth). The Spaniard did not shine until Q2, especially in perspective with Esteban Ocon (also penalized), but a final flash threw him in front of the Silver Arrows.
Extraordinary performance for Alexander Albon, who takes Williams to Q3 and to the third row. Behind him we find the eliminated in Q2: then Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll.
Another disappointment for Sebastian Vettel, out in Q1 by just two thousandths but still in the fifth row. Immediately eliminated also Nicholas Latifi, Kevin Magnussen and Yuki Tsunoda (mistake in his last attempt), who will then start behind the four-time German world champion and immediately in front of Valtteri Bottas, the first of the penalized.
