The freezing of the power unit implemented starting this year, it imposed choices on manufacturers. He made choices that in the case of Ferrari were very courageous, also because at the beginning of 2021 there was certainly a serious gap from Mercedes and Honda.
The work done in Maranello last year was a path towards the top, a path that Ferrari hopes to have completed. And, indeed, Maranello seeks new paths with innovative solutions, which the head of the engine engineers Enrico Gualtieri he explained in detail: “The 2022 car, on the power unit side, has a double meaning. On the one hand, we had to contribute to the regulation change through a specific installation and layout. On the other hand, we had to develop our product in the best possible way, given the subsequent freezing until the new regulatory course. The result is an unconventional, extreme project from the point of view of the installation in the car, the layout and certainly most of its internal components. Certainly the internal combustion engine and the turbocharger are the elements that characterize the 2022 power unit at the beginning of the season, also because the hybrid system is in fact a consolidation of the evolution that we brought to the track at the end of last season. The electronics also had to change a lot and had to adapt to the needs of a completely revised car and a decidedly different engine from last year. In general, it represents the third step of our development paththe first being the engine of the start of last season and the second the evolution of the hybrid system brought to the track at the end of 2021. The 2022 power unit represents the third step in our product development path, having been the first the introduction of the engine at the beginning of the 2021 season and the second the introduction of the hybrid system at the end of last season“.
“The freezing of the power unit certainly weighed. Let’s say that, compared to previous years, it has us pushed and forced to dare even more in the design solutions, given the important deadline and the subsequent freezing period“, Gualtieri continued. “We had to push all our plans to the limit, we had to keep the door open until the last moment for all possible evolutions and certainly we had to take all the necessary risks. Let’s say that it was an accelerating element of development in a world, ours, which in itself does not go smoothly“.
