The tunneling machine – or tatuzão, as it is popularly called – equipment that excavated the line 6 Orange of the São Paulo Metro, did not collide with the sewage collection network that broke this morning (1st) and caused the collapse of part of the Marginal Tietê, in the capital of São Paulo. According to the president of Acciona, the concessionaire responsible for the construction and operation of the line, the equipment was located 3 meters from the ducts.
“There was no collision between the armadillo or tunneling machine with the networks, collectors or pipelines. we are looking for the cause [do rompimento] now. It probably has to do with the rain, with erosion, because the tunneling machine was three meters away from this collector. There was no shock”, said André de Ângelo, president of the company.
The rupture of the sewage ducts flooded the subway tunnel under construction and destabilized the ground, causing the collapse that hit the local road of Marginal Tietê, towards the Ayrton Senna highway. Four people were treated by the medical service, but are doing well.
According to the president of the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp), Benedito Braga, the company has already managed to partially divert the flow of sewage that was flooding the subway tunnel. “Right now, the amount of sewage that arrives here is much smaller than it arrived in the morning. The situation is not a big problem at the moment. By the end of the day, this sewage issue will be resolved,” he said.
The Marginal Tietê, in the reached stretch, has three lanes: the local, the central and the express. At the moment, only the expressway is open to traffic. The local road, directly affected by the landslide, will remain blocked. The central lane may be released in the next few hours, after authorization from the Comgás company, since gas pipelines pass under the lane.
“A pipeline from Comgás passes along this road, and the company would only release it within 24 hours. Once the gas is closed and verified that there is no longer any instability on the ground, we will be able to release the central lane”, highlighted the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes.
The governor of São Paulo, João Doria, ordered the Acciona concessionaire to quickly point out the causes of the accident. According to the governor, the company should also develop, together with the city hall of São Paulo, a solution to normalize traffic on the waterfront. “It’s priority number one,” said Doria.
The governor confirmed that Acciona will be charged so that the works on Line-6 can be resumed as soon as possible. According to him, the government’s objective is that the work schedule is maintained in relation to deadlines, but with safety as a priority.
