“No not true. Kurt Cobain talked about us! ”
Tintti Leppänen and Anne Tamminen experienced the surprise of their lives when Helsingin Sanomat quoted recently Interview with Nirvana’s beak man from the summer of 1992.
“What do you hate most about fame?” journalist Everett True asked Melody Maker on July 25 after the Ruisrock gig.
“When there are signs among the audience that reads on the other side Even Flow and on the other side Negative CreepCobain replied.
Negative Creep is Nirvana and Even Flow Pearl Jamin’s song. Cobain was annoyed that the fans associated them with the same sign even though he thought Nirvana was the real thing, Pearl Jam didn’t.
“And it was our sheet,” says Anne Tamminen, digging the evidence from her backpack.
NirvanaIn a footnote to his book, Everett True adds: “This happened in Ruisrock, Turku. Unfortunately, the Pearl Jam side of the sign was facing Nirvana for most of the time. I’m doing Spirit, which made Kurt change the chorus to the form of the lyrics’Even Flow / even flow / even flow / even flow‘. ”
More specifically, the Even Flow mantra began with words Hello, Hello, Hello High Low after. And while True and Cobain talked about the “sign,” it was a sheet supported by two sticks.
“This is a used baby sheet that my mother gave us for this purpose,” Tamminen says.
“We went to our friends Riikka Singer to the lawn of the yard and the residual paints obtained from his parents were used for the texts, ”says Leppänen.
“We digged from both Nirvana and Pearl Jam and expected to see both, so a song was taken from both of them. It really took a toll that Pearl Jam had canceled, ”he continues.
Why is the sheet still stored?
“Mom doesn’t throw anything away. In his closet, this had survived, ”says Tamminen.
Ruisrockin At the time, Tamminen was 18 and Leppänen was 19.
“We were part of a group of girls who had been performing at gigs together since 1987,” says Leppänen.
“Tickets often went on sale in the middle of the school day, so one put the coins in the school lobby phone while the other tried to secure the tickets on the phone,” Tamminen continues.
Ruisrock was a dream come true because Nirvana was fanated with devotion.
In Ruisrock Cobain was probably happy to see him at first Negative Creep text. It proved that Finnish fans also know the production Nevermind-from the pre-breakthrough period. Negative Creep plays as the last song in the actual set.
The annoyance of the rock star has been all the greater when the competing Pearl Jam was seen on the other side of the sheet. Even Flow.
An unofficial Youtube video proves that Cobain started singing Even Flow -mantra as an extra heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on about 69 minutes after the start of the gig.
“We laughed right away that we could influence what Kurt sang,” Leppänen recalls.
“I thought that the Even Flow “Singing the words may be fucking and we’re a little annoyed with that sheet,” Tamminen continues.
A little later Smells Like Teen Spirit during which the video also shows Tint and Anne’s sheets on both sides: sometimes a flash towards the camera Negative Creep and between Even Flow.
“However, the turnaround was due to the fact that we were quite close to the stage and thought to show those behind it that there is a song by Nirvana on the other side of the sign. Negative Creep, ”They recall.
“By the way, we would have been thought of as just fans of Pearl Jam at the Nirvana gig,” Leppänen continues.
The gig even remembered a dangerous crowd that made the bassist drown the audience. Maybe that’s also why Cobain performed calmly and didn’t quite move, even though he played and sang well. You can read HS’s gig review of Ruisrock in 1992 behind this link.
But how does it feel that “the most hateful thing for the public” was, in Cobain’s opinion, the sheet that Tint and Anne turned in the audience, where both Nirvana’s and Pearl Jam’s songs were digged?
“The barking of the fans was a bit stupid. No Dave Grohl would never do that, ”says Leppänen.
He refers to the drummer of Nirvana who became the guitarist, singer and songwriter of the band Foo Fighters after Cobain’s death. Leppänen has a Foo Fighters tattoo and has also attended several gigs abroad.
“I’m a little sad that Cobain took that sign around,” Tamminen says. “However, we have been such sincere and kind children in that fanatic affair.”
“But I’m pretty proud to have made a piece of rock history,” says Leppänen.
“I told my students to tear up when Hesari talked about Cobain’s reaction,” Tamminen continues.
Nowadays Tintti Leppänen is a stylist, make-up artist and hairdresser living in Naantali.
Anne Tamminen, on the other hand, is a visual artist, professional art teacher and jazz singer.
And the old gang still gathers from time to time for gigs to experience the boundless joy of rock.
Now their own children are the same age group as Leppänen and Tamminen at the Nirvana gig. They are also interested in music, as are some of the mothers ’favorite bands from their youth.
“If you can say something to young people, go to concerts!” Leppänen urges. “It’s much better for mental health than life through a laptop and a phone.”
