Medvedev and Rublev leave no chance for the Croats in singles, the double is irrelevant. For the Russians the third triumph after those of 2002 and 2006
The 2021 Davis Cup is for Russia. After the success of Andrey Rublev (who had passed 6-4 7-6 Borna Gojo) came the victory of Daniil Medvedev, number two in the world, who beat Marin Cilic with a score of 7-6 6-2 in the final played in Madrid. It is the third time that Russia has won Davis after the successes of 2002 and 2006.
Russia never reached the quarter-finals from 2011 to 2018, but then they emerged as one of the leading nations in men’s tennis. Shamil Tarpishev, who has been a non-stop captain since 1997 (he has missed only one match since), had a choice of four Top 30s. The worst ranked of the Russians, Karen Khachanov, would have been the first singles player out of 12 of the 18 nations present.
