For 5.9% of Italians Covid does not exist, for 10.9% the vaccine is useless
There economic recovery accelerates, Covid like a shadow returns to being the “fear” of millions of Italians and growth and life expectations change. The 55th Censis report photographs a situation in the country in constant evolution. For example, alongside the “reasonable and wise” majority in Italian society, “a wave of irrationality” is growing.
For 5.9% of Italians – about 3 million people – Covid simply does not exist; for 10.9% the vaccine is useless and ineffective. For 31.4% it is an experimental drug and people who get vaccinated act as guinea pigs. For 12.7%, science does more harm than good.
The study speaks of “a fatuous sleep of reason, a fatal escape into magical, witchcraft, shamanic thought, which claims to decipher the occult sense of reality“. We observe “an unreasonable willingness – explains Censis – to believe in premodern superstitions, unscientific prejudices, unfounded theories and conspiracy speculations”. From techno-phobias, “19.9% of Italians consider 5G a very sophisticated tool to control people’s minds”, to historical-scientific denial “5.8% are sure that the Earth is flat and 10% are convinced that man has never landed on the Moon “.
And again, 39.9% of Italians are certain of the “danger of ethnic substitution”, or that “national identity and culture will disappear due to the arrival of immigrants, bearers of a dynamic demography compared to Italians who no longer have children,” and all this happens for the interest and will of alleged opaque globalist elites ”.
“The irrational – is what emerges from the report – it has infiltrated the social fabric, both the individual skeptical positions and the protest movements that this year have inflamed the squares, and carves out a not modest space in public discourse, conquering the top of trending topics in social networks, climbing the book sales charts, occupying the television spotlights “.
The irrational that today manifests itself in our society “is not simply a distortion linked to the pandemic, but has deep socio-economic roots, following a parable that goes from resentment to psychic sovereignty, and which now evolves becoming the great rejection of rational discourse, that is, of the tools with which in the past we have built progress and our well-being: science, medicine, drugs, technologic innovations”. This is due to the fact that “we have entered the cycle of diminishing returns on social investments”.
This leads to “a vicious circle: low economic growth, therefore – explains Censis – reduced returns in terms of tax revenue, consequently the triggering of the spiral of public debt, a widespread social dissatisfaction and the rejection of the rational paradigm “. Therefore, the flight into the irrational is “the result of unsatisfied subjective expectations, even if they are legitimate as they are fed by the same rational promises”. In fact, 81% of Italians believe that today it is “very difficult” for a young person to have the investment of time, energy and resources made in studying recognized in life.
35.5% are convinced that it is not convenient to undertake to graduate, achieve masters and specializations, only to find themselves invariably with minimal earnings and rare certificates of recognition. Two thirds (66.2%) in our country lived better in the past: it is the sign of “a perceived race to the bottom. For 51.2%, despite the robust rebound in GDP this year, “we will never go back” to the economic growth and well-being of the past.
Among the points highlighted by the report “ci they are restraining factors that are conspiring against the economic recovery. All the socio-economic risks that we feared during the pandemic – the collapse of consumption, the closure of businesses, bankruptcies, layoffs, widespread poverty – are now being replaced by the fear of not being able to fuel the recovery, to stumble into old obstacles that have never been removed or into others that appear suddenly, all the more insidious the faster our run will prove to be. Starting with the risk of a flare-up of inflation ”.
