Rumors of the sale of MacLaren were already circulating in the European press, but this Monday (15), the English website Autocar stated that the company was bought by Audi – but it backed off. In a statement, McLaren denied its acquisition.
The British company alleged “lack of precision” to the information of a journalist on the site that made the sale. “McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers. There was no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group”, the company published in a note.

Audi, which belongs to Volkswagen, did not comment on the subject, although Reuters reported this Sunday (14) that Audi “is open to opportunities for cooperation”. The eventual acquisition of McLarenm by Audi would also involve the command of the Formula 1 team.
McLaren has its sale speculated due to an accumulated debt of R$3.6 billion. Last October, CEO Mike Flewitt resigned after eight years at the helm of the brand.
Volswagen has already bought several automotive superbrands: Lamborghini (bought in 1998 by Audi), Bugatti, Bentley and Porsche – all with 100% of their shares.
The purchase of McLaren would pave the way for a technological merger between the Volkswagen group’s subsidiaries. The British automaker is developing an electrification program for supercars that could be useful for projects developed by Lamborghini. The European press also airs Volkswagen’s intention to enter Formula 1.
