Flights|Finnair’s flight to New York was canceled on Saturday due to a technical fault. The replacement route was flown via Tokyo.
Flight canceled too late Aaro Olhavan high school group’s trip for two days.
Finnair flight from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to New York was canceled on Saturday due to a technical fault. The replacement route was flown via Tokyo, and according to Olhava, the duration of the trip including changes stretched to 28 hours.
“They wanted the cheapest possible. There would certainly have been closer and faster flights,” Olhava commented on the route choice.
Ills according to Olhava, did not end when a new flight had been arranged.
According to Olhava, the first flight was twenty minutes late. He slept almost the entire flight, even though the space was cramped for Olhava, who is almost two meters tall.
“The place is also buzzing. I was supposed to have a premium seat, but I had to sit at the very back of the plane.”
According to Olhava, he tried to ask about his changed place, but they didn’t know how to say anything.
On the other hand, Finnair states that Olhava has traveled in the travel class according to her reservation, also on a new route. According to Finnair, a premium economy seat was mistakenly shown in the rerouting situation in the reservation, which was corrected to the economy class according to the reservation as soon as the error was noticed.
from Japan the trip continued on a United Airlines plane.
“Even on that flight there was enough turbulence and there was even less space than in Finnair’s plane,” Olhava describes.
We got there two days later than planned. Travel plans were changed when not all the agreed destinations could be reached. Because of this, it was decided to extend the trip by one day.
According to Olhava, the length of the travel plans has upset the whole group, even though everything has gone quite well since they got there. Olhava says he is disappointed with Finnair’s decision to replace the original flight with a route lasting more than a day.
“It’s not fair.”
Finnair according to the report, the replacement flight was not routed through Tokyo because of lower costs, but because the route was the fastest available option with room for the entire group.
In fact, organizing a connecting flight from Tokyo with a company outside the oneworld alliance is an expensive option, the director of communications Days Tallqvist Finnair says.
Tallqvist says that Finnair had to find replacement routes for almost 300 passengers from the same canceled New York flight. Some were only able to leave on Monday or Tuesday, while, for example, Olhava’s group was already able to leave on Sunday.
According to Tallqvist, there would have been alternatives to routing through Tokyo, but then the group of high school students would not have been able to travel until the beginning of the week.
“It would have shortened their journey more. They would have been in New York much later than on the flight via Tokyo,” says Tallqvist.
August is the busiest holiday travel season worldwide, and all flights are almost fully booked.
“I understand very well that a long flight with a layover has been difficult for the customer. But we have genuinely tried to get them to New York as quickly as possible in a situation where all companies’ flights have been full.”
