The authorities have decreed that state of maximum alert following the forest fires that spread across Greecesome of which were set deliberately, such as the one that exploded near the highway leading to Athens international airport.
“The fire spread at the speed of light, but there is documented evidence that the cause was not just the weather,” the Minister of Climate Emergency and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, told broadcaster Ert. “There are videos that clearly show an arsonist starting a fire by burning dry grass,” he added.
Kikilias pointed out that firefighting teams find themselves facing “dozens of fronts”, some of which are “very dangerous”. The minister then announced that since midday “almost every ten minutes” the presence of a new fire has been confirmed. The weather service is predicting winds of up to 45 miles per hour for the rest of the week and temperatures reaching 100 degrees in some parts of the country.
