The heads of Israel’s Northern Command, Major General Ori Gordin, and the Operations Department, Major General Oded Basiuk, approved this Tuesday (18) operational plans for a possible offensive in Lebanon.
The information was revealed by Israeli media, which cited a statement issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
In this statement, the IDF says that, during a “strategic assessment”, both generals decided to “accelerate the preparation of Israel’s ground forces” for a possible offensive on Lebanese territory, which would be a “response to repeated attacks by Hezbollah” and Palestinian terrorist groups that are operating on Lebanese soil against northern Israel.
The IDF statement comes in a context of greater tension in that region, with Hezbollah intensifying its attacks against Israel in recent days. The Israelis, in turn, have already retaliated with coordinated attacks in southern Lebanon, which culminated in the death of several high-ranking members of the terrorist group that is allied with Iran.
The possibility of a broader conflict between Israel and Lebanon has been a cause for concern. The IDF emphasized on Tuesday that if a diplomatic solution is not reached, stronger military measures will be employed to push back Hezbollah.
“We are prepared to take military action if diplomatic efforts fail to address the threats posed by Hezbollah along our border,” the Israeli military said.
