The Minister of Security of Argentina, Patricia Bullrich, visited the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) of El Salvador on Sunday, the megaprison converted by Nayib Bukele into the spearhead of his war against gangs. The politician reiterated that the intention of the Government of the far-right Javier Milei is to replicate the security model of the Central American country. During her visit, the minister also visited the National Academy of Public Security (ANSP) and has a meeting on Tuesday’s agenda with President Bukele to talk about the possibility of exporting this security system to Argentina.
CECOT, which currently houses nearly 40,000 people accused of gang membership, has been singled out for repeated human rights violations. During the emergency regime, the government of El Salvador has suspended constitutional freedoms and detained more than 70,000 people.
