A crowd of people gathered in Malawi to pay tribute to Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima amid tight security measures on Monday after his death in a plane crash along with eight other people last week.
Chilima (51 years old) was buried in his village, Nsibi, in the Ntchiu region, about 160 kilometers southeast of the capital, Lilongwe, Blantyre.
President Lazarus Chakwera attended the burial ceremony on Monday. Chakwera called for an independent investigation into the plane crash and the response.
Political leaders also called for calm.
Chilima was the leader of the United Transformation Movement party. He joined Chakwera in forming the ruling “Tounisian” coalition and was chosen for the position of vice president when the coalition achieved victory in the 2020 elections.
Chilima was arrested in 2022 on graft-related charges. A court acquitted him last month, after the prosecution submitted a notice to dismiss the case. Chilema denied any wrongdoing.
