Corinaldo massacre, all acquitted for the most serious crimes: no “gaps in the venue’s security measures”
The nine defendants in the trial relating to the massacre of the ‘Lanterna Azzurra’ nightclub in Corinaldo were all acquitted of the most serious crimes, including the charge of multiple manslaughter.in which the night between 7 and 8 December 2018 six people died, related to alleged deficiencies in the safety of the premises and in the authorization procedures.
That night in the venue, which was full of young people waiting for the singer’s performance to begin Sfera Ebbastait was sprayed pepper spray, and panic broke out: in the escape and in the crowd along a ramp, outside an exit, the balustrades collapsed and six people died when overwhelmed. Five very young people lost their lives, Emma Fabini, Asia Nasoni, Mattia Orlandi, Daniele Pongetti, Benedetta Vitali and a 39-year-old mother, Eleonora Girolimini, who had accompanied one of her four children to the concert. Of the 9 defendants, six were members of the Supervisory Commission for Public Entertainment Venues, two technicians and a partner of Magic Srl which managed the ‘Blue Lantern’ where the tragedy occurred: they were accused, for various reasons, of manslaughter, negligent injury, disaster and ideological falsehood.
Disappointment and anger among the victims’ relatives. “It was a further killing of our children, the State should be ashamed”, Fazio Fabini, Emma’s father, told reporters. “To get the words out today is more difficult than when my sister left because they killed her again. I was hoping that everything I heard during the hearings was over but today was the icing on the cake”, underlines Francesco Vitali, Benedetta’s brother.
Some of the defendants were also present in the courtroom. Among these Matteo Principi, the former mayor of Corinaldo and president of the Supervisory Commission on public entertainment venues. From today’s sentence I expect “what we have supported from the beginning: the truth about this matter, whatever the cost. We await the outcome of this very complicated process for everyone and we see the result which is the fruit of a contribution that each of us has given to reach the necessary truth about the matter”, commented Principi before the sentence. To those who reminded him of the fact that during the trial he wanted to underline the correctness of his and the commission’s actions, he reiterated: “We have retraced all the Commission’s activity, we have looked into it in depth and we have brought to light all the work done. Today we await the result of this work.” In recent years there have been no contacts with the relatives of the victims: “There have been no contacts with the families, I think it is difficult in these phases and I believe everyone’s positions must be respected – he concluded – There are different sensitivities and wounds that respect even with silence.”
