Work outdoors during the hottest hours of the day in agriculture, horticultural activities and construction sites is prohibited in Calabria until 31 August. Objective “to safeguard the health of workers, thus reducing possible risks deriving from the heat, especially for workers subjected to outdoor and particularly tiring activities with very high temperatures”, the Governor of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto, explains to Adnkronos Salute regarding the his order – which also refers, among other things, to art. 32 of the Constitution which protects health – which prohibits “work in conditions of prolonged exposure to the sun, from 12.30 to 16.00” in activities with the greatest impact.
“This year too we have decided to issue an ordinance which prohibits working in conditions of prolonged exposure to the sun during the summer months, from mid-June to the end of August. A provision adopted in full collaboration and synergy with the unions and in time quickly”, added Occhiuto, underlining how it is “important to safeguard the health of workers”.
The high air temperature, humidity and prolonged exposure to the sun, we read in the ordinance, represent a danger to the health of workers exposed to solar radiation for long periods of time, therefore at risk of thermal stress. and heat stroke with even lethal outcomes. Penalties are foreseen for those who do not respect the ban.
