The Chinese authorities evacuated about 36,000 people following massive floods caused by torrential rains in the Fujian province in southeastern China, according to what the New China News Agency (Xinhua) reported on Sunday.
According to the agency, large parts of Fujian were destroyed by torrential rains that continued for days, which led the authorities to issue an evacuation decision. Xinhua reported that about 179,800 people were affected by the rain by Saturday evening. Chinese authorities warned on Sunday evening that more heavy rain was expected in several areas. According to the National Meteorological Center, parts of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong provinces in the southeast of the country, and towards the west in Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, are expected to be exposed to heavy rains or storms on Monday.
The center said heavy rains were expected, including rain levels of more than 70 millimeters per hour, and thunderstorms. The Ministry of Water Resources and the Meteorological Department issued an orange level warning, the second highest level. Some areas in southwest Zhejiang and northern Fujian issued the highest level red warning due to the risk of mountain streams flooding. Local authorities were asked to take precautionary measures.
