The Israeli army announced yesterday that it would adhere to a “tactical truce in military activities” daily in a section of the southern Gaza Strip during specific hours of the day to allow aid to enter the besieged and devastated Palestinian Strip, which is threatened by famine after 8 months of war.
But the army was keen to stress that despite the “tactical truce, there is no cessation of hostilities in the southern Gaza Strip and military operations in Rafah continue.”
The announcement of this decision came the day after 11 Israeli soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip, 8 of them in a bomb explosion.
The army said in a statement, “A local tactical truce in military activities for humanitarian purposes will be implemented from 8:00 to 19:00 every day until further notice, starting from the Kerem Shalom crossing to the Salah al-Din Road and then north.”
He added, “This decision was taken in the context of efforts to increase the volume of humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip following talks with the United Nations and other organizations.”
The United Nations welcomed Israel’s announcement of a daily truce in military operations in the southern Gaza Strip, while demanding that this lead to other concrete measures to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, according to a spokesman in Geneva.
