President Alexander Stubb believes that the weekend peace meeting in Ukraine will increase the pressure on Russia. Almost half of the world’s countries, a large number of them at the head of state level, gathered in the mountain resort of Bürgenstock in Switzerland.
“The pressure is clearly increasing. Now diplomacy has been brought alongside war as a way to resolve this conflict.”
According to Stubb, Russia can no longer make unilateral statements. According to him, the first steps towards peace have been taken.
“They must understand that this indiscriminate killing of other people, this imperialist war that they are waging at the moment, must be stopped.”
Stubbs spoke to Finnish journalists at the end of the meeting on Sunday.
Stubb confirmed the same as the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in his own closing speech: Finland has promised to host lower-level working group negotiations in which the actual peace meeting is prepared.
“It is without a doubt clear that at some point Russia must be brought to the negotiating table, but at what point, it is still open.”
According to Stubb, in the coming days and weeks it will become clear at what level and on which issues the negotiations are ready to continue.
“Work continues. The first steps towards peace have been taken,” said Stubb.
Swiss the peace meeting ended on Sunday with a joint statement.
The statement directly talks about Russia’s war against Ukraine and the extensive human suffering and destruction it has caused. According to the statement, the war has global consequences.
Throughout the conference weekend, President Stubb emphasized getting the global south to support Ukraine. Some countries, such as Mexico, India and Saudi Arabia, ultimately did not support the declaration.
Zelenskyi said at the press conference that ended the meeting that there can be no lasting peace without territorial integrity.
The meeting in Switzerland was not an actual peace meeting, but a preparatory meeting. Zelenskyi said that the negotiations will continue at the technical and ministerial level.
