Two guards who were taken hostage this Sunday by members of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) in a prison in the Rostov region, in southern Russia, have been freed unharmed during a special operation and the kidnappers were “liquidated”, hours later the prison services announced.
Among the kidnappers were members of the IS who were due to appear in court accused of “terrorism”, a security source told the Russian news agency TASS.
Russia has repeatedly been the target of attacks claimed by the jihadist organization.
On March 22, gunmen opened fire at a concert hall near Moscow, killing at least 144 people and wounding hundreds. It was the deadliest attack on Russian soil since 2004.
Since then, more than 20 people have been arrested, including the four alleged attackers, all of them from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia bordering Afghanistan.
