Republic president Alexander Stubb hopes that the person who committed the “brutal” stabbing in Oulu will be held accountable for his act.
Stubb commented on the incident at a press conference for Finnish journalists on Saturday in connection with the Swiss peace conference. He believes that the stabbing in Oulu shows that the atmosphere in Finland is “partly tense”.
“I hope this is an isolated case. I consider this incident to be tragic, very unfortunate, and I hope that everyone involved in the situation recovers as soon as possible,” said Stubb.
The man suspected of stabbing a 12-year-old child in Oulu has strong connections to far-right groups and a long history of violence.
President also expressed his views on Friday’s news that the NATO headquarters will be located in Finland.
“This is a strong message about how Finland is on its way from the margin of Europe, from the easternmost country in NATO after Turkey, to the core of NATO’s operational structure and function – that is, defense and deterrence,” said Stubb.
According to Stubb, it is “too early to say” about the possible location of the NATO headquarters, but getting it to Finland was “a good achievement for our negotiator”.
For example Mikkeli is considered an alternative for the location of the headquarters.
