Vacationing|Veera Peltonen, traveling to Thailand with small children, was surprised that the Finnair flight does not offer food to the child traveling in her arms.
from Kerava Veera Peltonen is traveling to Thailand with his family. In addition to the parents, the family includes 5-, 3-, and 1.5-year-old children.
Peltonen changed the rations for 3- and 5-year-olds to children’s rations in Finnair’s reservation service. However, it was not possible to order food in the reservation service for a 1.5-year-old child traveling in a lap.
So Peltonen decided to ask Finnair’s customer service for something to eat for the family. It would be simpler than carrying food.
The airline however, the answer surprised him.
“Finnair’s customer service said that it is not possible to buy food on the flight for children under the age of 2. You can buy something from the cart.”
Peltonen asked if there was something available from the food cart that children under two could eat. The customer service representative could not answer that.
So Peltonen tried to order extra food for himself so that all family members would have something to eat. According to the customer service representative, that didn’t work either, because it’s a long-haul flight.
“It’s not humane flight time not to eat.”
Couple has tried to solve the situation himself. Would either of the adults offer their own meal to the child? It wouldn’t solve the situation, because someone would be hungry anyway. Would you buy french fries on the field? On the other hand, it’s not nice to eat them cold either, Peltonen reflects.
One option is to take a nutritious snack with you on the flight, despite the fact that the child hasn’t eaten it in months.
“If Finnair doesn’t respond at all – – there can be an angry flight,” says Peltonen.
Finnair the communication is told by e-mail that it is not possible to buy an extra portion due to technical limitations and limited food storage space.
If you book your own seat on the flight for the lap child and pay for a separate ticket, the ticket includes an in-flight meal.
A few cans of baby food are kept on all Finnair long-haul flights. However, Finnair recommends that children under the age of 2 bring their own snacks. A child traveling as a lap child may take e.g. milk on the plane.
Airplanes do not have microwaves for heating baby food, but according to Finnair, the flight personnel can heat baby food in a warm water bath if necessary.
