Finland Minja Korhonen was chosen as the best young athlete in Europe at the annual meeting of the European Olympic Committees in Bucharest on Thursday.
17-year-old combined skier Korhonen is the first Finnish athlete to win the recognition named after Piotr Nurowski. In addition to the honor, Korhonen received a prize money pot of 15,000 euros.
The Piotr Nurowski Award is given to an athlete aged 14–18 who has been successful in their sport and has promoted Olympic values in and out of competition. The prize is awarded separately for summer and winter sports.
“I accept the award on behalf of all united women. Combined is a young sport on the women’s side and together we have been building international recognition. I believe that the women’s team will rise to the Winter Olympics in the future. I am pleasantly surprised by the award”, Korhonen said in his speech.
Siilinjärvi Representing the effort, Korhonen won the World Youth Championship gold and two golds at the Youth Olympics last season.
