The first to help the children were the swimmers themselves, who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers.
How many times have we heard that in bad weather it is always dangerous to be on the beach, even in flat places without other “lightning rods” to protect us. The protagonists of today’s news, unfortunately, are very young. They were walking calmly on the beach, maybe they were even playing carefree, as is right for children. But at a certain point they were hit by a lightning.
The tragedy occurred two days ago, Monday 27 May, on a beach in the coastal city of Isabela, in the north of Puerto Rico, involving three children aged between 7 and 12 years. All three were transported to hospital in the nearby city of Aguadilla after the accident. The 12-year-old would be in more serious conditions than the other children, as reported by the American agency ‘Associated Press’.
The terrible scene it was taken from a smartphone and shared on social media, predictably becoming viral on the web. In the images, the children are seen hit by the electric discharge and falling into the sand, as if pushed by the force of the lightning.
The local newspaper ‘Primera Hora’ reported that the children were playing on the sand a few meters from the Parador del Mar Hau establishment. Carlos Cruz, director of the Isabela Municipal Emergency Management Agency, told the Puerto Rican portal that the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. “At that moment, one of the parents had come out of the water to look for something in a refrigerator that they had brought with them, when he saw the lightning and heard one of the children screaming,” he explained.
The first to rescue the children were the swimmers themselves, who executed resuscitation maneuvers cardiopulmonary. The mayor of Isabela, Miguel “Ricky” Méndez, confirmed that the three children belonged to a family of tourists of Puerto Rican origin who stayed near Montones beach: “They were Puerto Ricans from Toa Baja, they live in the United States and were on holiday ”. The tragedy comes just after the National Meteorological Service in San Juan had issued a flood warning for Monday in 12 locations, including Isabela.
