The National Council of Public Defenders and General Public Defenders (Condege) decided to provide legal support to the assistance of the Public Defender’s Office of Rio Grande do Sul, due to the calamity caused by the rains. The request for support reached Condege through two letters from the Public Defender of Rio Grande do Sul, Nilton Leonel Arnecke Maria, the entity reported.
According to a document sent by the public defender, the headquarters building of the Public Defender’s Office, in Porto Alegre, was flooded and 27 other regional units remain devastated and inaccessible. The state has been suffering for weeks from heavy rains that caused flooding in several municipalities, leaving part of the population without electricity or water, and thousands of people homeless.
“The initial request to Condege was for virtual support to comply with the subpoenas sent to public defenders in Rio Grande do Sul, for a minimum period of 30 days, but we agreed that all State Public Defenders’ Offices will provide assistance while service in Rio Grande do Sul is not available. reestablished”, explained in a statement the president of Condege, Oleno Matos.
According to the council, the Cooperation Agreement was accepted by all representatives of the Public Defender’s Offices of the 26 states and the Federal District. The Council decided that the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul will also sign the cooperation agreement. In addition to reinforcing the assistance provided by the Rio Grande do Sul entity in the progress of cases, virtually, the agreement provides for joint efforts to provide direct assistance to families affected by the environmental tragedy.
“We are going to start the work virtually, dispatching the processes from the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul. At the beginning of July, we are studying the possibility of sending defenders from all over the country to disembark in Rio Grande do Sul and help local defenders for a period of 30 days”, explained Matos, highlighting that if there is a need to remain there for longer, the task force can be renewed for another 30 days.
Condege is a nationwide civil association that functions as a permanent body for coordinating and articulating the interests of the Public Defender’s Offices in Brazil, in addition to guaranteeing Brazilian men and women full and free access to justice.
