A three-year-old boy fell into a river while playing and almost drowned. After being declared brain dead, he woke up again.
Salt Lake City – The three-year-old boy was riding his toy tractor when he accidentally drove into a river in Beaver County and was swept away. Because the boy had been underwater for a long time, there was initially little hope of recovery. Levi was declared brain dead.
In the USA, a story about a 14-year-old boy recently caused a stir. The boy ate an extremely spicy tortilla chip and died as a result.
Boy (3) falls into stream – wakes up after being declared brain dead
His mother kept friends and the public on her Facebook-Account up to date. It is not known how long the boy was under water. However, his mother announced that first responders had performed resuscitation measures for an hour. Levi was taken to a hospital on Tuesday (May 25th) and then flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City in critical condition.
There, the doctors declared him brain dead and the three-year-old was beyond saving. Then on Friday, the mother received the surprising news: “Levi has woken up. I’m still shaking. We don’t know much yet, but they said that I can see that as a good sign. My baby is so strong.” As she wrote, he then became a little wild and had to be calmed down with tranquilizers.
Three-year-old wakes up after brain death – mother dampens his joy
Just a few hours after hearing the news that Levi had woken up, his mother dampened her joy again. “The fact that he woke up doesn’t mean that he spoke or was receptive. He just opened his eyes for a short time and moved a little. We still had the feeling that he could hear us.” Two days earlier, she said, doctors wanted to turn off the life support machines – but another doctor convinced her that the boy should be given more time to recover.
The family of rodeo star Spencer Wright put their hopes in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, which was supposed to show activity in the brain. The mother shared the results in an emotional and depressing message: “The MRI was not good, we are devastated. There are a few images that suggest a certain quality of life. We just have to wait and see how Levi develops in the next few days, I am not giving up on my baby yet. I hope that a doctor can tell me something positive.” Last year, a missing girl from Bingen could only be recovered dead. (rd)
