A 15-year-old dedicated his life and his passion for technology to the church until he died of leukemia. Now he is to be canonized.
Vatican City – The Vatican is considering whether 15-year-old computer genius Carlo Acutis will be canonized by Pope Francis. Until his death in 2006, the teenager was world-famous as a believer who published famous websites on religious topics among devout Catholics as a “cyber apostle.”
After he was beatified in 2020, the Pope has now recognized another “miracle” that should pave the way for his canonization. Most recently, an incident during one of the Pope’s masses was interpreted by believers as a “heavenly sign.”
Second miracle recognized: 15-year-old “influencer apostle” is said to have healed a student from Costa Rica
The Vatican Press Office announced on Thursday (23 May) that a miracle had been recognized through the intercession of the deceased youth. According to information from the official news portal catholic.de The “miracle” is a case from 2022 in which a student from Costa Rica is said to have been miraculously cured. The 21-year-old was in the Italian city of Florence at the time and suffered a serious head injury in a cycling accident.
While the doctors had little hope for the student, her mother apparently made a pilgrimage to the grave of the 15-year-old cyber apostle to pray for her daughter. The same day, the student was said to have been breathing independently again and was even released from the hospital a short time later.
Acutis himself died of leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15. The association “Friends of Carlo Acutis eV“ gives on his Website an insight into the life of Acutis. At the age of eleven he began to create an online directory of “Eucharistic Miracles” on the Internet, which is shown as an exhibition all over the world. Eucharist is the official word for the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion in the Catholic Church. He became known worldwide for a quote in which he described the Eucharist as a “highway to heaven”.
Pope considers canonization of deceased teenager Carlo Acutis
The 15-year-old was “a fun-loving, computer-savvy youngster” until his death, the association writes. In addition to his passionate devotion to religion, he enjoyed playing football or PlayStation with his friends or making videos. “At the same time, he developed a very intense friendship with Jesus at a very early age,” it continues. Because of this, he is sometimes called “God’s influencer” these days. After his death, Carlo was buried in the city of Assisi in Italy at his own request.
The assembly convened by the Pope will now decide whether Carlo Acutis will be canonized. He was already beatified in 2020 after he was credited with a miracle of healing a seriously ill three-year-old Brazilian child. (nz)
