The historic steamship “Säntis” is to be salvaged from Lake Constance. After a failed attempt, preparations for a new attempt have been completed.
Romanshorn – A second attempt to raise the historic steamship “Säntis” from the depths of Lake Constance is imminent. Silvan Paganini, the chairman of the Swiss Ship Salvage Association, confirmed in Romanshorn that preparations are largely complete.
New rescue attempt in Lake Constance: Steamship “Säntis” to be brought to the surface
If everything goes according to plan, the wreck will be brought from a depth of 210 meters to a depth of 12 meters between Saturday (May 25) and Sunday (May 26). The final lifting lines have already been pulled in. However, the exact time when the “Säntis” will finally be brought to the surface has not yet been determined.
The steamship, which had been sailing on Lake Constance since 1892 and could carry up to 400 passengers, was sunk in the middle of the lake between Romanshorn on the Swiss side and Langenargen on the German side in May 1933 because it was no longer seaworthy. Some people also refer to it as the “Titanic of Bavaria”. Scrapping it was rejected at the time due to the high costs.
Salvage of steamship “Säntis” failed previously – work successful this time
A first attempt to salvage the sunken passenger ship failed in mid-April due to technical difficulties. This time, however, the work on the wreck was successfully completed, according to the association.
The steamship will be lifted in a controlled manner using lifting bags attached to support cables and then towed under the direction of the association. It will initially be positioned off Romanshorn at a depth of twelve metres. It is then planned to bring it to the surface using the lifting bags. The ship will later be preserved and possibly put on display.
250,000 euros in donations for rescue operation in Lake Constance
The ship salvage association, which was founded in 2023, has intensified preparations for the operation since the successful crowdfunding for the salvage of the steamship. The non-profit association has over 40 members. So far, more than 250,000 euros have been raised for the salvage. (moe/dpa)
