Stoltenberg called for allowing Ukraine to strike military targets in the Russian Federation
NATO head Jens Stoltenberg called for Ukraine to be allowed to strike military targets on Russian territory. He stated this in an interview with The Economist.
It’s time for allies [по альянсу] consider whether they should lift some of the restrictions they have placed on the use of weapons transferred to Ukraine
Stoltenberg stressed that the strategy needs to be changed now, when military operations are taking place in the Kharkov region, not far from the border. According to the NATO Secretary General, since Kyiv cannot strike at “legitimate military targets” in the Russian Federation, it is difficult for the country to defend itself. At the same time, he expressed doubt that the Russian offensive in the region will lead to a breakthrough.
NATO has no plans to send troops to Ukraine
Stoltenberg assessed the likelihood of sending troops to the country.
We have no intention of sending NATO ground forces to Ukraine
At the same time, he noted that the alliance provides Ukraine with weapons, ammunition and helps train soldiers.
The Secretary General acknowledged the risk of escalation. The task, he said, is to prevent the conflict from turning into a full-fledged war between Russia and NATO in Europe.

Stoltenberg does not know when Ukraine will be able to become a member of the alliance
The exact timing of Ukraine’s entry into NATO is unknown. However, Stoltenberg said that the alliance is helping Ukraine reach a situation where conditions for this will be created.
According to the head of the bloc, Kyiv should meet the technical standards of the alliance and increase its “operational compatibility” with it. He also added that in order to admit the country to the alliance, the political will of the leadership of the alliance member countries will be required.
Stoltenberg emphasized that even if the situation at the front becomes favorable for Kyiv, it will not be able to help but become a member of the alliance for many years to come. He also urged not to expect serious decisions on Ukraine at the summit in Washington in the summer dedicated to the 75th anniversary of NATO.
In Crimea they called Stoltenberg’s statements an attempt to intimidate Russia and put pressure on it
This opinion was expressed by the Chairman of the Crimean Interethnic Mission Zaur Smirnov.
Stoltenberg’s call is nothing more than an attempt by the collective West to intimidate Russia and put pressure on us. This occurs against the backdrop of the successful advance of the Russian army and the strengthening of Russia’s position in the event of possible negotiations
Smirnov said that Ukraine is already carrying out strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation and added that in the event of a strategic danger, Moscow will take measures provided for by its military doctrine.
