The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, will launch next Tuesday (May 28, 2024) the guidelines for the use of body cameras by police officers in Brazil. According to the organization, the objective is “standardize the use of this technology in Brazil, increasing transparency and protection of security professionals and citizens”.
“Scientific evidence states that body cameras reduce use of force and officer conduct complaints by 25% to 61%. Furthermore, there is a reduction in the underreporting of cases of domestic violence: in the presence of cameras, police officers start to report this type of offense by 69% more in Santa Catarina and 101% in São Paulo. The program will be announced after the attempt by the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), to enable agents to turn off equipment already used in the State.
The project was adopted in Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina and is in the process of being implemented in Minas Gerais, Rondônia and Roraima.

On the same day, Lewandowski will also announce the implementation of Escuta Susp (Single Public Security System). The project aims to provide specialized psychological assistance to professionals from the Civil and Military Police, Fire Department and official criminal expertise institutes.
From Tuesday (May 28), the schedule for online psychological care will be open in the Federal District and in Minas Gerais, Sergipe and Rio Grande do Norte. In other states, consultations will begin in January 2025.
The project was developed in partnership with UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), a reference in suicide prevention. In the 1st stage of the project, there will be more than 65,000 sessions to serve the country’s public security professionals.
The project was created, according to the government, in view of the high number of police suicides (821 since 2015) and frequent cases of depression and burnout in the category.
