Another employee of the Russian Ministry of Defense was arrested – the head of the department of the military department for ensuring state defense orders, Vladimir Verteletsky.
The Russian Investigative Committee reported on Thursday that he was charged with abuse of official powers in the implementation of a state defense order. The court has already arrested Verteletsky for the duration of the investigation, taking him into custody at the request of the investigation.
Verteletsky received a house and a car as a bribe from a businessman
The Russian Investigative Committee claims that in 2022 Verteletsky “accepted the uncompleted work as part of the development work under the government contract.” Because of this, the state suffered damage amounting to more than 70 million rubles.

The official’s income increased sharply over the year
Lenta.ru analyzed data from Verteletsky’s declarations for 2013-2020 and found that his income increased sharply from 2019 to 2020 – from 1.7 million rubles to 3.7 million rubles.
In 2013, Verteletsky owned a Kia passenger car. A Volkswagen was registered in his wife Elena Silantyeva’s name. The family had one apartment with an area of 60.6 square meters and one garage with an area of 18 square meters. Verteletsky earned a million rubles during this period, and his wife earned 427 thousand rubles. For six years, by 2020, no significant changes in declarations were recorded.
In 2020, Verteletsky became the owner of an Audi Q7. However, no more vehicles were registered to him and his wife. In addition, in 2020, a detained employee of the Ministry of Defense earned 3.7 million rubles. His wife – 256 thousand.

Verteletsky is another high-ranking military man arrested in a month
At the end of April, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was arrested. He was detained at his workplace. According to investigators, the deputy minister entered into a criminal conspiracy and, as part of an organized group, received property benefits from contracting and subcontracting work for the needs of the military department. Ivanov was charged under Article 290 (“Receiving a bribe on an especially large scale”) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. He did not admit his guilt.
On May 13, it became known about the detention of Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov, head of the Main Personnel Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The investigation believes that in 2021-2023 Kuznetsov received a bribe from businessmen for performing certain actions in their favor. During searches, more than 100 million rubles in rubles and foreign currency were found and confiscated from him.
On May 21, a military court took into custody the former commander of the 58th Army of the Russian Armed Forces, Major General Ivan Popov. He is accused of involvement in the theft in 2023 of more than 1.7 thousand tons of rolled metal products purchased by the administration of the Zaporozhye region. They were intended to strengthen defensive structures on the line of combat contact. Their cost is estimated at more than 130 million rubles. At the same time, the Investigative Committee later asked to release the general under house arrest.
Finally, on the same day, May 23, the head of the Main Communications Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin, was arrested. He was also suspected of receiving a bribe on an especially large scale.
