The Chinese dictatorship classified as “shameful” the stance of the new president of Taiwan, William Lai Ching-te, who took office this week and who, like his ally and predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, intends to maintain the policy of independence of the island in relation to Beijing and closer ties with the United States.
Lai, from the Democratic Progressive Party, was elected in January in a contest in which he faced candidates who advocated greater rapprochement with China.
In a press conference this Wednesday (22), Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that actions for “Taiwan independence” are the biggest obstacle to “peace” in the strait between the two countries.
“People like Lai Ching-te betrayed their nation and their ancestors. What they did is simply shameful. No matter what tricks they use, they will not prevent the complete reunification of China and the return of Taiwan to the embrace of the motherland. All ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists will see their names written on the wall of shame,” Wang said.
Taiwan has been administered separately from mainland China since 1949, when nationalists, defeated by communists in the Chinese Civil War, took refuge on the island. Beijing considers Taiwan a rebel province, to be reincorporated by 2049, when the end of the conflict will be one hundred years old.
Taipei frequently denounces Chinese incursions into Taiwan’s airspace and territorial waters, which has led the United States to increase military aid to the Taiwanese.
